Reading Tutors

Each year, Laurus College participates in a National America Reads initiative. The purpose of the initiative, and Laurus' participation in it, is to promote literacy and encourage a life-long love for reading and learning.

Whats in it for you?

This work-study program provides Laurus students an opportunity to discover some hidden (or known) gifts, give back to their local communities, and add great resume-building experience. Reading tutors staff one-day events at Laurus College's in-residence locations. Reading tutors have also "staffed" one-day events at locations that serve children, such as local Boys & Girls Clubs, children’s sports events, and libraries, and participated at reading booths at community events. They have also provided ongoing tutoring at those locations. Reading tutors receive training on developing reading lesson plans that they can in turn use in their tutoring sessions.

Locations

This Year, Santa Maria Area reading tutors are serving at the local Good Samarian Shelter's After-School Program. In the past, we've read at other local after-school programs and locations including:

  • Good Samaritan Shelter - Santa Maria
  • Children's Resource & Referral of Santa Barbara County
  • Boys & Girls Clubs of Mid Central Coast
  • Boys & Girls Club of Greater Ventura - Bill LeFevre Center
  • Santa Maria Public Library - Children's Department

Reading tutors have created videos featuring the reading along with theme-related simple craft projects and snack ideas for a fun at-home family reading experience. The latest reading video is a bilingual presentation, Perro! Perros! Dogs! Dogs! You are invited to take a look at all our reading tutor videos to enjoy with your family!
